General Overview
English for the Social Sciences is a course designed for first-year students of the Common Core in Social Sciences. It aims to help students use English as a language of knowledge and research, and to give them access to academic sources in their field of study. The course does not teach general English separately from the discipline; instead, it links language learning directly to the content of the social sciences, so that students learn English through the subjects they study and, at the same time, become familiar with the basic terminology of each discipline.
The course consists of 28 lectures of 90 minutes each (42 hours in total). It follows a regular alternation between two types of lectures. Odd-numbered lectures are reading lectures: each one introduces a discipline of the social sciences through an accessible academic text, followed by key concepts, comprehension questions and vocabulary practice. Even-numbered lectures are grammar lectures: each one explains a simple grammar point using examples taken from the previous reading text, followed by graded exercises and a short writing task. In this way, the reading text becomes material for language practice, and grammar rules are learned in a meaningful academic context.
The disciplines covered include sociology, psychology, demography, anthropology, history, educational sciences, orthophony, philosophy, economics, political science, communication and media studies, and social work. The course moves from a general introduction to the social sciences to an overview of research methods, and ends with a general review of the grammar studied during the year. Every lecture includes a short video (about two minutes), a written dialogue that can be read aloud or used for dictation, and an answer key.
