Listening & Speaking
Listening & Speaking is a practical skills-based module designed to develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in spoken English and understand spoken language actively and accurately.
The module is divided into two complementary semesters.
Semester 1 – Speaking
The first semester focuses primarily on speaking and oral communication. Students will be introduced to the theoretical and practical foundations of effective spoken communication and will explore different situations in which they may be required to communicate orally in English.
Topics and activities will cover situations such as public speaking, conversations, interviews, discussions, presentations, and other forms of interpersonal and academic communication.
Students will learn about key aspects of effective speaking, including audience awareness, purpose, organisation of ideas, verbal and non-verbal communication, delivery, pronunciation, fluency, interaction, and strategies for managing speaking situations.
The emphasis will be placed on putting these concepts into practice through regular speaking activities, pair work, group work, role plays, discussions, and presentations.
Semester 2 – Listening
The second semester focuses on listening comprehension, active listening, and note-taking.
Students will work with different types of spoken English and develop strategies for understanding main ideas, key information, supporting details, speakers' intentions, and important vocabulary.
They will also learn and practise effective note-taking strategies, including identifying key information, distinguishing main ideas from details, organising information, using abbreviations and symbols, and producing useful notes from spoken material.
Overall Objective
The overall aim of the module is to help students become more confident, effective and independent communicators in English.
Throughout the year, students will be given frequent opportunities to speak, listen, interact, present, discuss, respond and take notes.
The module therefore places a strong emphasis on active practice: students are expected not only to learn communication strategies and concepts, but to use them regularly in authentic and classroom-based communication situations.
